Addiction Medicine: Respectful, Evidence-Based Help for Recovery

Addiction Medicine Respectful, Evidence-Based Help for Recovery

Substance use disorders are medical conditions, not moral failings. At Suncoast Family Urgent Care & Wellness Center, our addiction medicine services are built on compassion, privacy, and science-backed treatment.

Whether you’re seeking help for the first time or returning after relapse, you’re welcome here. We know recovery is a journey—and we’re here to walk it with you.

What Is Addiction Medicine?

Addiction medicine is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of people struggling with substance use disorders. This includes:

  • Alcohol use disorder
  • Opioid use disorder
  • Certain other substance-related disorders

Our goal is to stabilize your health, reduce harm, and connect you with the physical and emotional support you need to move forward.

A Whole-Person Approach to Substance Use

Your care may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment – health history, substance use history, mental health screening, lab work
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) – when appropriate, to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms
  • Medical support – managing related conditions like infections, liver issues, pain, or sleep problems
  • Referrals and coordination – working with counselors, therapists, and support groups
  • Relapse prevention strategies – practical tools and planning for high-risk situations

We work collaboratively with you, honoring your goals and pacing.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

At your first addiction medicine visit, you can expect:

  1. A judgment-free conversation about your substance use and goals
  2. Review of your medical history, medications, and mental health
  3. Possible lab work or tests to assess your overall health
  4. Discussion of treatment options, including MAT if appropriate
  5. A safety plan and follow-up schedule tailored to you

We understand that reaching out is often the hardest step. You will be treated with dignity and respect.

Q&A: Addiction Medicine at Suncoast Family Urgent Care & Wellness Center

Q: Is my treatment confidential?
A: Yes. Your privacy is protected by law, and we take confidentiality very seriously. We only share information with others when you give permission or when legally required for safety.

Q: What if I’m not ready to quit completely?
A: Our role is to meet you where you are. We can still provide education, harm reduction strategies, and support as you move toward your goals—even if full abstinence isn’t immediate.

Q: What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
A: MAT uses FDA-approved medications along with counseling and support to help treat substance use disorders, especially opioid use disorder. These medications reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms and are part of a structured treatment plan.

Q: Will you force me into inpatient rehab?
A: No. We’ll discuss all options, including outpatient and inpatient programs, but decisions are made collaboratively. In rare cases where safety is severely at risk, we’ll talk honestly about what’s needed.

Q: What if I relapse?
A: Relapse can be part of the process for many people. We will not judge or abandon you. Instead, we’ll analyze what happened, adjust your plan, and continue to support your recovery.

Q: Can my family be involved?
A: With your permission, supportive family or loved ones can be part of your care. We’ll help set healthy boundaries and expectations.
