Osteopathy is a complementary form of medical treatment that focuses on holistic health. Doctors who specialize in osteopathy (D.O.) are educated in much the same way as traditional medical doctors (M.D.) and can prescribe medications, recommend surgery, etc., but they have additional training in osteopathy as well.
Osteopathic treatment aims to treat the patient through hands-on manipulation of joints, muscles, and bones to relieve pain and other symptoms. These techniques are collectively referred to as Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and may include things like gentle pressure, stretching, and resistance. By using these methods, your doctor can help you achieve increased whole-body health without the use of medications as the first line of treatment.
